Vote Yes! – Metropolitan Park District this November
In a few days ballots will be mailed for the November 3rd election. Those of you who vote in Olympia will have the opportunity to create a Metropolitan Park District through Proposition I. Please vote YES.
Passing Proposition I is critical to our goal of PROTECTING AND PERFECTING THE VIEWS TO AND FROM AMERICA’S MOST MAGNIFICENT CAPITOL CAMPUS SETTING, and building the CAPITOL VISTA PARK on the Isthmus.
Recent news accounts report that yet another proposal has surfaced to renovate the long vacant Capitol Center Building. This follows several other failed attempts to salvage this structure. In our opinion, the best solution to the blight on the Isthmus is to remove this building that sits in the middle of what, otherwise, would be one of the great civic vistas in the nation. If the proposed renovation happens, we will be stuck with this mistake from the past for another fifty years.
Passage of Proposition I makes it much more likely that the city of Olympia will have the resources to acquire and demolish the building. The Olympia Capitol Park Foundation asks the city to immediately discuss with the current owners options to acquire the building as soon as possible.
The city, with financial support from Thurston County and our foundation, already acquired and demolished the former Housing Authority building and will shortly begin demolition of the former Health Department building. We need to add the Capitol Center Building site in order to complete the land acquisition for the park.
Please share this communication with your family, friends and neighbors, especially if they are Olympia voters. The November vote on Proposition I is critically important. PLEASE VOTE YES.
