Major Milestone – Demolition of first building to begin
As 2014 comes to a close, we are pleased to report that a major milestone will occur in our campaign to protect and perfect the views to and from America’s most magnificent capitol campus setting. Next week, with the help from an engineering battalion from the US Army, work begins on the demolition of the former Housing Authority building on the site of the planned Olympic Capitol Vista Park on the Isthmus.
The demolition of this first building is expected to be complete by mid-January. The city plans to remove the former Health Department building in the spring of 2015. Once these two buildings are taken down, we move to the next tasks of developing the first phase of the park, and to finding the resources needed to acquire and demolish the vacant nine story building that now sits in the center of the iconic view from the Capitol to the Olympics. The funds for acquisition and initial site development were provided by the City of Olympia, Thurston County, and the Olympia Capitol Park Foundation.
We are now joined by the volunteer effort from the soldiers from Joint Base Lewis- McChord (JBLM). We will continue working with our legislative delegation to secure financial help from the state of Washington to remove the vacant tower building. The City of Olympia Parks and Recreation Department will hold a series of neighborhood meetings to gather ideas on the future of parks in the city. Please try to attend one of these meetings. If you cannot attend the one in your neighborhood, you may attend any of the meetings.
Here is a list of the meetings:
- December 3, 6:30-7:30 pm at Jefferson Middle School 2200 Conger Avenue, NW;
- December 10, 6:30-7:30 pm at McKinney Elementary School 3250 Morse-Merryman Road, SE;
- January 5, 6:30-7:30 pm at the Olympia Center 222 Columbia Street NW; and
- January 8, 6:30-7:30 pm Southwest Neighborhood (location to be announced).
Thank you for all of your past support and please consider a year-end donation to mark this outstanding milestone and to maintain our momentum into the New Year.
We are all part of creating a legacy gift to perfect one of the great iconic views in America. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and Holiday Season!
